Home Remedies For Men To Remove Sun Tan

Come summer and most beach lovers start planning a vacay by the sea. We understand the vibe! Even though you are aware that summer brings more heat and more exposure to the Sun, the idea of lying on the beach for hours with a summer drink and a book to read brings happiness. However, the gift of sun tan isn’t exactly the kind of reminder everyone wishes to keep.

Sun tanning isn’t just about the darkening of the skin, the target concern caused by tanning is skin damage that may lead to skin cancer. Most men do not apply sunscreen religiously which makes their skin more prone to damage. As a man, your skin is naturally thicker in comparison to a woman’s skin. This makes the tan removal process a bigger challenge for you but it is not something you cannot take care of.

What Is Sun Tanning?

The process of the darkening of your natural skin colour after being exposed to direct sun rays is called sun tanning or simply tanning. Moderate exposure to direct sunlight contributes to the production of melanin, a brown pigment that is responsible for your skin colour and vitamin D in the body. How much you tan depends on your skin type, natural skin colour, and genetics.

The Sun’s Ultraviolet A radiation aka UVA rays penetrates the innermost layer of the skin’s surface triggering melanin production. It is bad news because this kind of skin damage can lead to serious problems like skin cancer in the future. UVB radiation attacks the topmost layer of the skin and assists in causing skin cancer and sunburns and damages the skin’s DNA.

Simple & Effective Home Remedies To Remove Sun Tan For Men

Sun tan naturally fades away and your skin starts returning to its natural colour within a few weeks unless you’re continuously exposing it to the Sun. However, due to the pigmentation or uneven skin tone, most people wish to get rid of sun tan as soon as possible. There are a few simple yet effective home remedies that can help you with the process.

Honey and Lemon Mask

Whenever wondering how to remove sun tan, feel free to think of lemon as your skin’s friend. It’s a natural bleaching agent. Take a tablespoon of lemon juice and mix it with a tablespoon of honey. Apply it to your face. Leave it for 30 minutes and then, wash it off with cold water.

Gram Flour and Turmeric Mask

The classic. Both besan and turmeric are excellent for skin brightening. Take 2 tablespoons of gram flour and half tablespoon of turmeric. Mix it with milk or curd to make a paste. Apply it to your face and body. After it dries, scrub it off with lukewarm water.

Yoghurt and Tomato Mask

Tomatoes have antioxidants that help in skin brightening. Yoghurt has lactic acid which softens the skin. Take some fresh tomato juice and mix it with 2 tablespoons of yoghurt. Apply it on the affected areas and let it sit for 20 minutes. Wash it off with cold water after.

Cucumber Extract

Cucumber is well-known for its calming effect on the skin. Its cooling nature helps in removing the tan. Shred a fresh cucumber and squeeze the juice out of it. Use a cotton ball to apply the juice to the skin. Allow it to dry and then, wash it off. You can also add lemon juice to cucumber water if you wish to.

Potato Juice

For your eyes and face, you can also use thin potato slices directly. Keep it on for 10-15 minutes and wash it off after it dries.

Oatmeal and Buttermilk Mask

Oatmeal is good for skin cleansing and exfoliating, it also helps in lightening the skin complexion with time. Buttermilk is packed with lactic acid that improves skin tone and softens the skin. Take 2 teaspoons of oatmeal and soak it in water for a few minutes. Add 2 teaspoons of buttermilk to it. Add a teaspoon of honey to the mixture as well to reap the moisturising benefits. Mix it well and apply it to your face and body. Leave it for 25-30 minutes. Then, wash it off with cold water.

Red Lentil, Aloe Vera and Tomato Mask

Red lentil is highly effective when it comes to sun tan. Tomato juice brightens the skin while aloe vera soothes it. This mask leaves your skin feeling moisturised. Soak 3 teaspoons of red lentil in water for a few hours. Blend it after to make a thick paste. Add a teaspoon of aloe vera gel and 2 teaspoons of fresh tomato juice. Blend it properly and apply it to your tanned areas. Allow it to stay for 25-30 minutes. Then, massage it gently while rinsing off with cold water.

How To Prevent Sun Tanning?

There are remedies you can use for sun tan removal but there is no better option than prevention. If you avoid sun exposure altogether, you will not have to suffer from tanning in the first place. Although this isn’t a feasible option for everyone in today’s time, there are ways to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure. Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid going in the Sun during peak hours i.e. 12pm to 4pm.
  • Dark coloured clothing absorbs heat, so wear more whites and bright-coloured outfits as they will reflect the sunlight instead of absorbing it.
  • Cover your skin as much as you can when out in the Sun. Use accessories like hats, scarves to cover up and wear pants and summer coats for shielding.
  • Use a sunscreen or sun blocking lotion with higher SPF than 30 for the areas that are still exposed. Reapply it every 2 hours. Avoid the chemicals and bring in the power of Ayurveda into the picture with Nosun Jojoba-Wheatgerm Moisturising Sun Protection Gel
  • Use shades to protect your eyes from the heat in the Sun. Pick dark-tinted and polarised sunglasses.
  • If you’re exposing yourself to the Sun for vitamin D, do it in the morning time for about half an hour. It’s healthy.
  • Always carry a bottle of water or a summer drink and a few candies in your bag. It’ll keep you from having a sunstroke and will give you energy in case your blood pressure dips. It’s common during summers.
  • Avoid drinking too much during summers as alcohol has dehydrating properties. It can make your stomach upset.
  • If you’re dreaming of beaches, make sure you stay under an umbrella or in the shade to avoid feeling exhausted.

FAQs

Usually, your tan will fade away on its own. It takes about 2 weeks to 1 month in the process unless you are continuously exposing your skin to the Sun. If you cannot avoid the Sun and don’t want to tan, you must wear protective clothing or use a strong sunblock to keep the harmful sun rays out.

Darkening is your skin’s natural response when exposed to the Sun. But after a span of time, this darkening starts fading and the skin colour begins to lighten. If you continue to expose your skin to the Sun without any protective layer, your skin cells may get damaged with pigment causing discolouration that doesn’t fade.
